They love their guns in South Carolina

With a divided GOP field going into South Carolina, voters have a chance to make the Second Amendment an issue in this election. And they should.
South Carolina holds a distinctive place in our presidential nominating process. As the first in the South primary, its focus on faith, family values, military service and American traditions makes it one of the most conservative states in the country.

Anyone who’s ever campaigned in South Carolina will tell you that it’s worlds apart from many other parts of the country. And while Second Amendment rights are a sizeable factor in many states’ elections, in South Carolina you cannot win a general election if you’re seen as hostile to firearm freedoms.

That’s in general elections. In the GOP primary, you don’t even want to show your face in a crowd of Republicans if you aren’t ready to protect their gun rights.

Both Mike Huckabee and Fred Thompson have a perfect record for supporting Second Amendment rights. They’ve both talked about that in South Carolina and should make an issue of this latest development.

Is anyone listening? To all the Romney bandwagon jumpers…Where’s Mitt’s name here???

Mitt Romney really must take this opportunity to explain exactly where he stands on the Second Amendment. He angered gun owners in December by endorsing and promising to sign into law the Clinton gun ban and the Brady Bill on “Meet the Press.”Those were two of the worst anti-gun laws in American history. He should forcefully take a stand on this Justice Department brief, and while he’s at it he (Romney) should retract his support for these anti-gun laws.

Wholeheartedly agree. Romney needs to make it clear where he stands on the 2nd amendment. In Romney’s defense Bush said the same thing with regards to the assault weapons ban; he promised that if it got to his desk he would sign it. He knew it wouldn’t make it…

Thompson voted against impeachment and has a spotty record on the life issue.

Thompson is also suspect on the immigration and spending issues.

Huckabee is a liberal who got the gun issue right.

The point here is that you are obsessed with bagging on Romney – even as Romney is poised to win Nevada and get a Bronze in SC.

You should stick to the “He’s a Mormon” attacks – then we’d end up with McCain as the nominee and we’d have a Wahabbist muslim (Obama) for President or an Empty Blouse (Clinton) for President.

Thompson and Huckabee are on life support and Romney is the best hope we have to get a nominee that isn’t a RINO like Rudy or insane like McCain (hey that rhymes).

Who has your “Father” endorsed???

In fairness to Romney it should also be noted that while not explicitly endorsing Romney for Governor in Mass., the NRA did phone-bank for him. We all know an NRA endorsement would have sunk his campaign in such a Liberal state.

Romney is also accused of signing gun-control legislation in Mass; what is often conveniently left out is that the (NRA) endorsed the bill.

Oh please Thompson is “spotty” on Life issues!

I guess a 100% Pro life voting record, and an endorsement form National Right To Life is “spotty”.

Of course thats only if you pay never no mind to Romney’s sudden epiphany that systematically killing the unborn is a bad thing.

Suspect on immigration….how? His immigration plan stands up to conservative scrutiny.

Suspect on spending issues…again how?
Thompson is the only candidate to lay out specifics of his tax plan.

Lats time I checked I don’t recall Thompson supporting greater government intervention into health care either.

Oh and full marks for your “If you oppose Romney, your an anti-Mormon zealot” argument, but could you save those tactics for the intellectually devoid.

Look if you want to support Romney because you feel he is the “most viable” conservative candidate, fine, but remember that your reading audience is a little more well read then the average subscriber to the NY Times, so were probably not going to be sold a false bill of goods on Romney’s rock solid conservative credentials.

Come on Aaron, you know better than that. Fred has two major Pro-life endorsements. Even Huck doesn’t have that backing. And one of your all time favorite electeds (McClintock) even backed Fred from day one. There’s no argument here that Fred is the only really true Conservative in the campaign. If his wife wasn’t so involved he would be campaigning better and in turn would have better polling results. History will show how messed up we were as conservatives to not back Fred in this important primary.
